What is SEM (Search Engine Marketing)?

The World Wide Web or Internet as it is popularly known is an extremely crowded space online. There are just so many millions of websites and billions of web pages that it becomes quite tough to have any single website or webpage stand out and grab enough eyeballs to make any significant impact on the web. Search Engine Marketing is thus the means whereby adequate and abundant online traffic is directed towards the specific website in question. It involves quite a few techniques that are unique as well as varied in nature but the overall objective remains that of gaining traffic online fast. There are both paid as well as non paid means of search engine marketing.

What is PPC (Pay Per Click)?

PPC or Pay Per Click is a form of marketing online where visitors to a website are paid a certain amount every time they click on that website or webpage. This is a form on online marketing wherein companies allocate budgets to get people to visit their websites and get rewarded in terms of pay per click advertising. The overall objective here is to gain eyeballs to a website with the end aim being to create online business opportunities where folks can avail of goods or services that are being advertised online.

Difference between SEO and PPC

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a form of online marketing whereby specific keywords are used to ensure that the concerned website appears high up on the list of websites that are looked for online by topic or keyword by online users using search engines like Google, Yahoo and the like. This is different from Pay Per Click in that the pull to the website is based on keywords whereas in PPC there is a specific monetary reward that accrues to the end user which is not present in the case of SEO per se.

Difference between SEM and PPC

Search Engine Marketing is an umbrella term that is used to denote the various online means and techniques that are employed to ensure a high level of traffic to a website or a webpage. This could be both paid as well as non-paid forms of online marketing that are employed to this end. PPC or pay per click on the other hand is a subset of SEM whereby web users are paid for clicking and accessing websites. In PPC advertisers allocate specific budgets which determine the exact amount of money that a user can get on clicking a particular website.

Difference between SEM and SEO

Search Engine Optimization is a non-paid form of online marketing which makes optimal use of keywords that are picked up by the complex algorithms of search engines like Yahoo, Google or Bing based on which the relative ranking of a webpage in terms of display on the search site is determined. This also counts as a sub category of Search Engine Marketing which includes both paid as well as non-paid forms of online marketing as explained in detail above.
